Announcing the winner of the PublicHealth@UM tagline competition

PublicHealth@UM would like to announce the winner of the contest to design a tagline for the SPM Department’s Public@Health newsletter. The inaugural issue of our new monthly newsletter was released on Friday, 30th of March 2018. The contest was open to all postgraduate students, alumni and faculty members. Seventeen taglines were submitted. Overall, we had 121 respondents and one clear winner:

‘Creating the future of Public Health’

The winning submission was created by Dr Chow Sze Loon, from MPH cohort 2010 with 47 responses (38.8%).

Dr CHOW Sze Loon served in Sabah after obtaining his medical degree. The posting in Tawau Area Health Office proved to be the turning point in his career in Public Health. His involvement in the Flying Doctor Service, Mobile Clinic and visits to the Plantation Health Clinic around Tawau offered him rare and valuable insights into healthcare beyond the scope of the hospital. Under the apprenticeship of the former Tawau Area Health Officer, Dr Jiloris Frederick Dony, he embarked on the road less travelled – Public Health.

Dr Chow believes that work and health is a 2-way relationship. His thesis underscored the importance of assisting cancer survivors to resume work after treatment. He was privileged to be under the mentorship of Dr Anselm Su Ting, A/P Dr Tin Tin Su and A/P Dr Loh Siew Yim, during his DrPH journey.

Upon completing his DrPH, he was posted as the Port Health Officer in Penang, implementing the necessary public health capacities at seaport and airport to limit the spread of public health risks. Subsequently, he had a short stint in Quality Unit, State Health Department, overseeing all the KPI for Public Health, and assisted in conducting audits and training in the Quality Assurance Programme. Dr Chow was subsequently sent to Southwest District Health Office as the Epidemiology Officer, involved in the infectious control activities within the district.

At present, Dr Chow is heading the CPRC (Crisis Preparedness & Response Centre) in Penang State Health Department which carries out the surveillance activities on emerging infectious diseases in the state.
