Christmas in SPM – circa 1964-1969

With Christmas just around the corner, it brings back some memories of what happened in the faculty during those years. It was common for the departments to have Christmas parties and all were invited, staff and students. Different departments held it at different times either in the mornings or afternoons during tea breaks. It was a walk-in party where we just popped in, between classes, and had some cakes and tea /coffee or juices exchanged pleasantries with the staff and moved on. This would go on for the week preceding Christmas day. In SPM Prof Winnie Danaraj would decorate the SPM workroom, now designated as Bilik Mesyuarat 2. She and the staff donated the cakes, etc. She would wear one of those Santa Claus hats for the occasion. We students would wish her well, have a few good words with the staff and move on to other departments. For the week we had free coffee breaks. That was life!

To conclude a verse from the ” Twelve Days of Christmas” (modified)

On the first day of Christmas,
My grandpa said to me,
Eat merrily,
Drink sparingly.
Or you will be sick and be very s -o -rr -y.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All,
Three Cheers , Ho  Ho  Ho  !
